POST1 Food Consumption

The broad topic I chose for this assignment is food consumption. The specific topics I chose under this category were gratification and control of hunger (261) OR eating (264). I chose these two subcategories because in my free time I like to cook/bake. It will be very interesting to see the difference in culture between mine and others concerning the foods we eat and the way we control our hunger. I hope to see the differences in the food we eat based off of culture and region. I eat mainly American food with foods mixed in from different cultures but I rarely get to eat genuine native food from other countries. It is also interesting to look into the way other cultures portion their food because in American we eat large portions and often which contributes to our high obesity rate.

The first culture I looked into for possible research is the Igbo in Western Africa. The second culture I looked into is the Sherpa culture located in Nepal which is in Central Asia. The third culture I chose for this project was the Rwala Bedouin in the Middle Eat. I chose these three cultures because the process in which they eat, the foods they consume, and the amounts that are socially normal are all different. This will give me a large perspective on how other cultures put food to a standard. I am excited to find out how these cultures get gratification out of their food consumption and how their daily eating habits.

This picture is a good example of food from Africa. I chose this photo because it is a food I have lacked to try and fits the description of the types of foods describe in the brief summary I read over the Tsonga and Igbo cultures.

  1. I like how you used 3 totally different cultures to compare the similarities between them. Olivia, the title font reminds me of cake decoration. I am from Nepal, and we have so much verity of foods there mainly because we are between china and India we bring the best from both cultures.

  2. Hi Olivia, I've never consider that there would be different ways to control hunger so I'll be interested in how that varies from culture to culture. Just like you, I rarely get the opportunity to try real native food and want to make an effort to do that more often!

  3. Hi Olivia, when I want to learn about a new culture or people I first try to have a taste of their food. The Israeli cuisine is so diverse due that there are many different ethnic groups in Israel. Also, some of their cuisines are impacted by local Arabs or by Jews who came to Israel in 1948 after they were expelled from Arab countries after the Independence war, so they brought their culture and there food with them.
