Over the course of the semester, I have looked at three cultures. I chose the Igbo, the Sherpa, and the Rwala Bedouin cultures. As a reminder I chose the broad category of food consumption. The subcategories I chose were gratification and control of hunger OR eating. I have learned a lot about different cultures and their eating habits and traditions. There were a lot of similarities and differences between these cultures and my own. The Igbo culture uses subsistence and horticulture as a means of life. The Sherpa are agriculturalists and the Rwala Bedouins are Pastoralists. These are all very different ways of supporting the lives of their people. The Igbo culture eats mainly grains and bread, the Sherpa culture eats potatoes and vegetables, and the Rwala Bedouin eat mainly yams and bread. Although this seems like a major difference between cultures it actually has huge similarities. All of these cultures rely heavily on potatoes, wheat, rice, and bread. They all have different b...

POST4 Rwala Bedouin

Image
The culture I decided to research for this blog post is the Rwala Bedouin of the Middle East. They are mainly located in Saudi Arabia and are pastoralists. They speak Arabic and call themselves the Baduw which refers to the people of the desert. They were large pastoralists who lived off trade. A large part of their society was livestock raids. This is when they would redistribute their livestock from the tribes with the most to the tribes with the least. This process was short lived because it soon became violent. A large part of their diet was grains from nearby cultivators. Their culture continues to have small camel herds which they use for milk and wool. Men in this society carved wood while women worked with leather wand weaving. Women were in charge of a tent which them and their families lived under. During the seasons when they would need to move their settlements this was laborious work. The Rwala Bedouin's use a patrilineal line of descent. The Rwala Bedouins have many ...

POST3 Sherpa Culture

Image
The culture I chose for this assignment is the Sherpa culture of Central Asia. The Sherpa culture is found in the northeastern Nepal and a few places in India. Sherpa villages are placed at relatively high elevation and some even sit at the base of Mount Everest. The Sherpa people speak Nepali and their dialect comes form Tibetan. The Sherpa rely on their field agriculture of potatoes, barely, and wheat. The Sherpa people are Buddhist so they do not consume meat or kill animals. Trading and labor work are done by men while women do most of the agricultural work. Marriages are usually monogamist and arranged by the families. Men will travel a lot on journeys to trade and expeditions so they will not often be present in their children's lives. A good portion of their population are people who pledge their lives as nuns and monks. Many people of this culture take up Buddhist ecclesiastical arts, which is painting or iconography. As a reminder, my topic is about food consumption parti...

POST2 Igbo Culture

Image
The culture I decided to research for this blog post is the Igbo culture of Western Africa. Igbo actually refers to the language that the "Ndi Igbo" speak. Today's Igbo culture is centered in Nigeria and many other countries. The Igbo have one of the highest population densities in Western Africa. The Igbo men are known for their carpentry and the women are known for their pottery and woven clothing. Marriages in this culture are negotiated by the parents for the two people getting married. The Igbo lived in communities called compounds which were a cluster of huts with a central meeting place. As a reminder, my topic is about food consumption particularly eating habits, gratification, and control of hunger. There are many documents describing eating habits of the Igbo including what roles are played in food production and consumption. The best way to describe agriculture in the Igbo culture is that they are subsistence farmers and horticulturalists. They mainly harvest ...

POST1 Food Consumption

Image
The broad topic I chose for this assignment is food consumption. The specific topics I chose under this category were gratification and control of hunger (261) OR eating (264). I chose these two subcategories because in my free time I like to cook/bake. It will be very interesting to see the difference in culture between mine and others concerning the foods we eat and the way we control our hunger. I hope to see the differences in the food we eat based off of culture and region. I eat mainly American food with foods mixed in from different cultures but I rarely get to eat genuine native food from other countries. It is also interesting to look into the way other cultures portion their food because in American we eat large portions and often which contributes to our high obesity rate.  The first culture I looked into for possible research is the Igbo in Western Africa. The second culture I looked into is the Sherpa culture located in Nepal which is in Central Asia. The third c...

Hello! My name is Olivia Sims and this is my first year at NKU. I am a radiation therapy pre-major and very excited to start my program soon. My favorite animal is a sloth. I have no particular reason for liking sloths more than other animals but I do find them cute and interesting. I love all animals especially my dog Mercedes and my hamster Dudley. My favorite holiday has to be Thanksgiving. This is because the weekend is full of food and family. Fall is also my favorite season which helps contribute to Thanksgiving being my favorite holiday. I am excited to be back in person for this year even though it is with masks! I can't wait to get to know everyone.
